NURBS models are resolution independent (sort of like the vector graphics in Illustrator and Flash), which means your surfaces are defined mathematically to look good when rendered, no matter how close your camera gets.Īll renderers in wide use today, including Maya’s native render engine, must convert your geometry to polygons right as they begin rendering. The important part is that NURBS curves and surfaces can be a good way to create organic models (see Figure 2.6). Unless you are on CG Mathematician Jeopardy, you’ll never need to know what that means. NURBS stands for Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline. Subdivision surfaces are good for everything. Polygons are good for hard-edged, man-made objects.NURBS are good for creating organic squishy objects. Here’s a broad oversimplification that’ll get a bunch of people all worked up. Each has its own particular strengths t7T*J and weaknesses learning to use all three types is important. Maya can be used to create NURBS, polygonal, and subdivision surface geometry. Geometry comes in a few different flavors.
